Should I rent to someone with no credit history?

No credit is different from bad credit. Many excellent tenants—students, recent immigrants, young professionals—simply haven't built credit yet. Screen them using: larger security deposit, co-signer/guarantor, employment verification, bank statements showing savings, previous landlord references (even informal), and character references. Don't automatically reject—you may miss great tenants.

What is a co-signer and how does it work for rentals?

A co-signer (guarantor) is someone who agrees to pay rent if the tenant can't. They sign the lease and are legally responsible. Requirements: strong credit (680+), income 4-5x monthly rent, and willingness to be sued for unpaid rent. Common for: students (parents co-sign), young adults, and immigrants. Get co-signer's full application, credit check, and signature on lease.

How do I screen tenants who are recent immigrants?

For applicants without US credit history: verify visa/work authorization status, check international credit if available, require larger deposit (2 months if legal in your state), accept co-signer, verify employment and income thoroughly, request bank statements showing savings, and get references from employers or community contacts. Many immigrants are excellent tenants—stable, employed, and motivated.
